The Nigerian Youth for Atiku (NYFA), a support group for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has criticized the reforms implemented by the APC-led Federal Government, asserting that they require a comprehensive review as they are failing to produce positive outcomes.
In a statement following their bi-monthly strategic meeting in Lagos, the group’s Director of Communications, Mr. Dare Dada, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to initiate reforms in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the police, and other security institutions to enhance Nigeria’s democracy.
During the meeting on December 1st, 2024, NYFA assessed the nation’s economic situation and concluded that the policies of the APC-led government are not benefiting the populace.
Dada emphasized the need for the government to reflect on previous policies that have worsened the economic conditions for many Nigerians. He expressed concerns over the current economic hardships, stating, “It is essential for the government to take a break from further reforms that could inflict more economic injuries.”
He criticized the administration for creating policies detached from the realities faced by Nigerians, warning that neglecting public grievances is becoming a troubling trend.
Dada highlighted the urgency of addressing the high unemployment rate, particularly among women, asserting that this issue should be a priority for the government. He remarked, “If the female population is not employed, what will they be preoccupied with?”
He called for the government to prioritize alleviating the suffering of Nigerians, pointing out unresolved issues such as high inflation, unemployment, and the devaluation of the naira, which have diminished the purchasing power of citizens.
Dada also noted the challenges businesses face in Nigeria due to excessive taxation from various government agencies, which has led many multinational companies to exit the market and resulted in significant job losses.
As the group awaits a thorough review of the ineffective past reforms, Dada urged the government to withdraw its current tax reform proposal from the National Assembly and engage in comprehensive public discussions to ensure its suitability for Nigerians before passing it into law.
