Nigeria to Send 358 Athletes to 13th African Games in Ghana

Sports

The Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC) has announced that Nigeria will be represented by a contingent of no fewer than 358 athletes competing in 25 sports at the upcoming 13th African Games.

The statement was made by the Public Relations Officer of NOC, Tony Nezianya, in Lagos.

Scheduled to take place from March 8 to 23, the 13th African Games will be hosted in Ghana across three cities: Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast.

Athletics emerges as the sport with the highest number of athletes representing Nigeria, with a total of 50 individuals, followed closely by football with 40 participants. Other sports with notable representations include hockey with 32 athletes and volleyball with 24.

Additionally, Nigeria will field athletes in various martial arts disciplines, with arm wrestling boasting 15 representatives, while Taekwondo, wrestling, and karate each have 14 participants.

Among the team sports, weightlifting and badminton will each have 12-member teams, while boxing will be represented by 11 pugilists. Judo will have 10 athletes, and scrabble will field eight members.

Nigeria aims to build on its success from the previous edition of the African Games, where the country finished second on the medal table. In 2019, Team Nigeria secured a total of 46 gold medals, 33 silver medals, and 48 bronze medals at the Games held in Rabat, Morocco.

With a strong contingent of athletes across various disciplines, Nigeria is poised to compete fiercely and uphold its reputation as a powerhouse in African sports at the upcoming 13th African Games in Ghana.
