Ahead of the planned second round of protests on October 1st, 2024, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to provide necessary support and protection for the protesters, including safeguarding them from counter-protesters and mobs.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu, who made this statement today in Abuja also called on protesters to act within the boundaries of the law, avoid hate speech, and maintain peace.
Ojukwu further advised the government to use its resources to protect private and public properties, as well as the lives of both protesters and non-protesters, during and after the demonstrations, and to refrain from the use of firearms and teargas.
