FG set to adopt stiffer penalties to curb illicit activities of scavengers

The federal government is considering new legal measures to tackle the rising cases of theft and vandalism targeting public infrastructure, driven by the increasing activities of scavengers across the country.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who made this known during a press briefing at the end of FEC meeting in Abuja, stated that the government is deeply concerned about the growing trend of scavengers stealing metals and damaging public infrastructure, particularly on bridges and highways, in pursuit of resale profits.

While existing laws already criminalize such acts, the Minister said President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to undertake a thorough review of current legal frameworks with the aim of strengthening and enforcing stiffer penalties.

Additionally, the Minister announced that with President Tinubu’s approval, the Council has mandated the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) to issue new thresholds for the execution of projects and procurement of goods and services to all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs)
