CBN says revenue from stamp duty is N370.7 billion and not N89 trillion

Blog, News

The Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele has dismissed claims that CBN was holding N89 trillion Stamp Duty fund.

Fielding questions from journalists after the MPC briefing in Abuja explained that only N370.39 billion had been collected through Deposit Money Banks since the policy became effective in 2016.

Recall that a federal lawmaker, Hon. Gudaji Kazaure, had accused the CBN governor and the apex bank of illegally withholding a whopping N89 Trillion stamp duty levies, an allegation that had created much controversy in the system.

Our Correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that the Apex bank Governor speaking on the amount of money in circulation, said the apex bank has so far mopped up about N1.5 trillion, hoping to achieve about N2 trillion before the January 31st deadline.
