Senator Godswill Akpabio has been elected President of the 10th Senate of the National Assembly.
Senator Akpabio from Akwa-Ibom state was administered oath of office by the Clerk of the National Assembly, having polled 63 votes to defeat his Zamfara West counterpart, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, who polled 46 votes in the keenly contested election.
Our Correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that Senator Barau Jibrin from Kano state who was unopposed emerged as Deputy Senate President.
In his first speech as the President of the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen. Godswill Akpabio assured President Bola Tinubu that the 10th Senate will work for the success of his government,as he also pledged to work harmoniously with every member of the Upper legislative chamber irrespective of political affiliations or differences.

The newly elected President of the Senate also gave assurance that the national assembly under his leadership will give all necessary legislative backing to the removal of petrol subsidy by President Tinubu and ensure adequate oversight of the Executive to aid National development.

Despite the endorsement of Akpabio as Senate President by President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), the senate president said the red chamber will maintain its independence and will not serve as a rubber stamp to the executive.
