The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has re-elected President Bola Tinubu as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government for another One year term.
President Tinubu’s tenure was extended at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government on Sunday in Abuja, recognizing his leadership roles to ensure continuity and consistency in meeting the regional block’s targets on security, reconciliation, and development.

President Tinubu had earlier called on Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS to work towards the establishment and sustenance of a regional standby force for the security and economic advancement of the community.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu has solicited the support of ECOWAS member states to retain Nigeria’s position as the Commissioner for Political Affairs and Security at the African Union (AU) Commission.
Speaking at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of States and Government in Abuja, he reminded the member states that the AU Commission election is scheduled for February 2025, as he stressed that the West African region continues to face significant security challenges, including terrorism, violent extremism, and banditry.
The Nigerian leader underscored the importance of retaining this position, which is currently held by Bankole Adeoye, to address the security challenges facing the West African region.
