Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections and former governor of Kano State, has raised concerns that certain forces in Lagos are attempting to colonize Northern Nigeria. He made these allegations during a convocation ceremony at Skyline University in Kano, where he discussed the pressing challenges facing the North, including insecurity, hunger, poverty, and economic crisis.
Kwankwaso stated, “Today, we can see very clearly that there is a lot of effort from the Lagos axis to colonize this part of the country. Today, Lagos wouldn’t allow us to choose an emir; Lagos has to come to the centre of Kano to put their emir.”
He further claimed that young men from Lagos are actively working to impose taxes on the North and divert these funds back to Lagos. According to him, businesses in Northern Nigeria are being pressured to relocate their headquarters to Lagos, where they face higher taxation.
The former governor urged Northern lawmakers in the National Assembly to protect the interests of the region, emphasizing the need for vigilance against any actions that may undermine its welfare. He referenced a troubling instance between 1999 and 2000, where Northern lawmakers were allegedly bribed with large sums of money to support measures that negatively impacted the region’s economy.
Kwankwaso also addressed the growing disparity between the rich and the poor, asserting that some individuals are working to ensure the rich get richer while the poor become poorer.
