The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has said that the 10th assembly is considering reintroducing a bill on special seats for women and supporting electoral reforms to increase female representation in leadership structures.
Speaking at a one-day high-level national summit on women’s inclusion in governance, the speaker represented by the Chair women in parliament, Hon. Fatima Talba, stated that women constitute 49.45% of Nigeria’s population, but their representation in governance has not kept pace with their numbers.
In his address the Founding Executive Director of the Centre for Leadership Strategy and Development, Otive Igbuzor, urged the 10th National Assembly to pass the five gender bills rejected by the ninth assembly. He noted that Nigeria has only 4% women representation in government, compared to 25% globally and 20% in Africa.
Other speakers at the summit, including Hon. Abimbola Solanke and Yar’Dada Maikano, called for increased women’s inclusion in leadership. The summit aimed to promote women’s inclusion in politics and governance.
