The Federal Government has initiated plans to incorporate the Agricultural Insurance Scheme into the National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro-Pocket Program (NAGS-AP) to enhance sustainability and food security.
The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Dr Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, who disclosed this at the Agricultural Insurance Train-the-Trainer Workshop in Abuja, stated that the integration aims to protect investments and interventions made by the government and the African Development Bank (AfDB) through NAGS-AP.
Abdullahi noted that climate change risks, such as floods, droughts, pests, and diseases, have become central issues affecting the government, financiers, and farmers, leading to significant food price inflation.
He cited the 2023 wet farming season, where ginger farmers in Kaduna lost over 90% of their harvest due to the ginger blight disease, resulting in estimated losses of N12 billion.
