In a significant move to combat the malaria epidemic in Nigeria, the Federal Government has officially added a malaria vaccine to the national routine immunization schedule. This announcement was made by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Mohammed Pate, who stated that the rollout of the malaria vaccine will commence this week, starting with Bayelsa and Kebbi states as pilot locations for the initiative.
Bayelsa and Kebbi will be the first states to receive the malaria vaccine.
The initial phase of the rollout will focus on the most vulnerable populations in these states, with plans to expand the program nationwide in the future.
In addition to the malaria vaccine rollout, Prof. Pate also introduced Nigeria’s second National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and a National Genomic Surveillance Strategy. These initiatives aim to address the growing threats posed by antimicrobial resistance and enhance the country’s capacity to monitor and respond to infectious diseases effectively.
The introduction of the malaria vaccine is a crucial step in Nigeria’s efforts to reduce the burden of malaria, which remains a significant public health challenge in the country.
