As part of efforts to restore investors’ confidence and ease Foreign Exchange crisis in Nigeria, the Central Bank on Nigeria Governor, Olayemi Cardoso has said that the Apex bank is targeting Diaspora remittance inflows of $1 billion monthly.
CBN Governor, Cardoso who stated this at a joint press briefing with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, at the end of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington DC, said remittances hit $600 million in September, from $250 million a month in April this year and authorities are targeting $12 billion annually.
Our Correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that the CBN Governor disclosed that the apex bank is engaging at the highest level to facilitate Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) “grey list,” an anti-money laundering watchlist by May 2025.
He also reeled out numerous achievements of the ongoing reforms such as the Banking recapitalization, noting that the apex bank would be “vigilant” in monitoring inflation and allowing economic data to drive interest rate decisions.
In an exclusive interview with our correspondent regarding the potential intervention of the Apex Bank in the healthcare sector, Cardoso stated that the CBN is prepared to align with the World Bank’s ambitious financial initiative, which aims to ensure that 1.5 billion people in low- and middle-income countries have access to quality, affordable healthcare services by 2030.
The CBN Governor expressed strong confidence in the leadership of Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Ali Pate, highlighting his efforts to garner support for the development of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
