US President-elect Donald Trump made a triumphant return to Washington yesterday, to meet with long-time political rival, outgoing President Joe Biden. Biden told the president-elect “congratulations,” adding that he looked “forward to a smooth transition” of power. Trump is moving quickly to build his incoming administration, having already announced some members of his new cabinet’s administration. Trump has nominated Congressman Matt Gaetz for Attorney General, former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard for Director Of National Intelligence, Senator Marco Rubio to be Secretary Of State, Pete Hegseth – a Fox News host and Army veteran – as Defence Secretary, and John Ratcliffe as head of the CIA. Republicans have again, secured majority control of the House of Representatives, solidifying leadership of both chambers of Congress. The party voted to return Mike Johnson as Speaker and Steve Scalise as House Majority Leader in the next Congress, which begins in January. Somaliland has held its presidential election, at a time when the breakaway Somali region sees international recognition within reach after three decades of defacto self-rule. President Muse Abdi, in power since 2017, is standing for re-election against the main opposition party’s candidate, Abdirahman Cirro. Somaliland, which occupies a strategic position near the entryway to the Red Sea, declared independence from the Mogadishu government in 1991, but has not been recognised by any other country, restricting access to international finance and the ability of its 6 million people to travel. NECO clears examiners allowances after protest threats

The National Examinations Council, NECO, says it has paid the allowances of all 72,138 examiners engaged as ad-hoc staff in the 2024 School-based Senior School Certificate Examination. Its Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, in a statement yesterday, explained that the Council commenced payment of the examiners allowances on October 4 on bank basis, and had finished yesterday. Sani therefore urged members of the public to disregard stories making round on the social media that the Council had deliberately refused to pay the examiners. Federal Government plans to source from the private sector, part of the 10 billion dollars required to provide regular electricity across Nigeria within the next five to 10 years. This formed the crux of the deliberation when the Director General of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, Dr. Jobson Ewalefoh, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, in Abuja. The duo agreed that in view of the funding and technical requirement needed to advance the power sector in Nigeria, it had become imperative to seek private sector input through Public Private Partnership in co-financing and providing expertise that will ensure optimal performance of power infrastructure.
