The World Health Organization (WHO) has reaffirmed that the recent surge in mpox cases still meets the criteria for a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), as outlined in the International Health Regulations (IHR).
WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, made this announcement following the fourth meeting of the IHR emergency committee on June 5. The committee, while acknowledging improvements in response capacity in some regions, maintained that the outbreak remains a global health threat.
This decision was influenced by the ongoing rise in mpox cases, particularly in West Africa, along with concerns about undetected transmission in other parts of the world. Dr. Ghebreyesus accepted the committee’s advice and issued updated temporary recommendations aimed at assisting countries in managing the outbreak. These guidelines are designed to enhance prevention strategies and control efforts to curb the spread of the disease.
The WHO has committed to providing further insights into the situation, with the full report of the latest emergency committee meeting set to be released in the third week of June. This report is expected to offer a more comprehensive assessment and recommendations to guide global and regional responses to the mpox outbreak.
