Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel’s conviction for murder has been overturned, marking a significant development in a case that has captivated the Caribbean nation for years.
The 48-year-old artist, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was sentenced to life in prison in 2014 for the killing of Clive “Lizard” Williams on the Caribbean island. However, his successful appeal, heard by the Privy Council in London, argued that a juror accused of attempting to bribe others should have been removed from his trial.
Following the appeal, authorities in Jamaica will now determine whether the case should be retried. Vybz Kartel, known as one of Jamaica’s most popular artists, has collaborated with renowned performers such as Jay-Z and Rihanna throughout his career.
The trial, which lasted 64 days, was one of the longest in Jamaican history. It concluded with Kartel being sentenced to serve a minimum of 35 years in jail, later reduced to 32-and-a-half years.
Prosecutors alleged that the victim, Clive Williams, and another individual, Lamar Chow, were entrusted with two unlicensed firearms belonging to Kartel for safekeeping. When they failed to return the firearms as agreed, they were reportedly summoned to Kartel’s residence in August 2011.
