Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has announced the cancellation of all official Eid-el-Kabir celebrations across the state in honor of victims affected by the devastating flood that struck Mokwa Local Government Area on May 29, 2025.
The flood is considered one of the worst in the state’s history, leading to the loss of over 158 lives, affecting 503 households, and displacing more than 3,000 residents. The flooding also caused extensive infrastructural damage, including the destruction of three major bridges, complicating rescue operations and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
In a statement from Abubakar Usman, the Secretary to the State Government, Governor Bago instructed that celebrations throughout the emirates should be conducted in a subdued manner. Festive events such as Hawan Bariki, Durbar, and other large public gatherings have been cancelled to ensure respect for the victims and their families during this challenging time.
The governor expressed his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and communities that suffered significant losses due to the flood. He called upon the people of Niger State to utilize the sacred occasion of Eid-el-Kabir for prayers in remembrance of the departed souls and encouraged acts of charity to support those affected by the disaster.
