The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has called on state governors to take charge of dilapidated federal roads within their territories rather than rely solely on the Federal Government, noting that true leadership involves proactive service delivery.
Speaking at a press conference to provide updates on emergency and ongoing road and bridge projects across the country today in Abuja, Umahi applauded governors who have already moved to fix key federal roads in their states, citing Edo State’s rehabilitation of a major stretch of the Benin–Asaba expressway as a positive example.
Shifting to political matters, Umahi criticised certain voices from the Southeast whom he described as “deceitful and sentimental,” accusing them of misleading the public with emotional appeals rather than presenting facts. He insisted that politics should be guided by dialogue and mutual understanding.
Addressing the status of NNPC-funded road projects, Umahi revealed that funding had ceased since August 1. However, he said President Bola Tinubu, in his capacity as Chairman of the Federal Executive Council, has directed the development of alternative funding strategies to ensure project continuity.
The Minister highlighted ongoing major infrastructure projects across the country—from the redesigned Katsina-Ala project in Benue, to the Jebba Bridge in Kwara, Mokwa Road in Niger, and the six-lane 439km concrete expressway from Akwanga to Gombe.
