In a notable escalation of the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has reportedly fired US-supplied long-range missiles into Russia’s Bryansk region, following a recent authorization from Washington allowing such strikes. This marks the first instance of Ukraine utilizing the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) against targets within Russia’s internationally recognized territory.
The attack occurred early in the morning at approximately 03:25 local time (00:25 GMT) on November 19, 2024. The targeted site was an ammunition depot located around 100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, near the town of Karachev.
According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, five of the six missiles were intercepted by air defenses, while debris from the sixth missile caused a fire at a military facility. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties or significant damage from the incident.
Ukraine’s military confirmed the strike on the ammunition warehouse but did not specify whether ATACMS were used. They reported that the attack resulted in 12 secondary explosions, indicating a significant impact on the targeted facility
This development comes shortly after President Biden eased restrictions on the use of American-made weapons by Ukraine, allowing for deeper strikes into Russian territory. Moscow has warned that such actions could lead to a direct involvement of the United States in the conflict and has promised an “appropriate and tangible response” to any attacks using Western weaponry
In conjunction with this military action, Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved changes to the country’s nuclear doctrine. The new policy stipulates that any attack from a non-nuclear state, if supported by a nuclear power, will be considered a joint assault on Russia, potentially escalating the stakes in the ongoing conflict
This incident underscores the increasing intensity of the conflict as both sides continue to engage in military actions that could have far-reaching consequences for regional stability.
