Meanwhile, some Nigerians still took to the streets to protest against bad governance. In Abuja, the Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, denied attacking the October 1 protesters in Utako, explaining that the operatives only took proactive measures to prevent looting.  In Delta State, residents however shunned the protest, as people went about their normal activities freely.  In Rivers state, alleged thugs took over the Port Harcourt Pleasure Park, which was the convergence point used during the August #EndBadGovernance protest.   And in Lagos, the peaceful protest closely monitored by security personnel, was joined by a former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Ikeja Underbridge and Freedom Park in Ojota.  The protest tagged “Fearless In October”, comes about two months after the August #EndBadGovernance protests.

The Federal Government has distributed 2,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tricycles to youths as part of commitment by President Bola Tinubu to alleviate the daily struggles of young persons.  The Minister of Youth Development, Dr Jamila Ibrahim, who announced this yesterday during the first phase distribution of the tricycles, said they would go a long way in easing the transportation challenges faced by citizens across the country.  According to her, the Nigeria Youth Investment Fund will also provide the financial backbone for many  young innovators to thrive, boosting not only youth employment but also our economy at large.  The Minister of State for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said that the country has both informal and formal young people, and the creation of Ministry of Youths was the best thing that happened to young people in Nigeria, which will go a long way in creating employment for young people.

The Federal Government of Nigeria says it is not discussing debt forgiveness with China, noting that Beijing is willing to lend Nigeria more money and invest more in the economy of Nigeria.  Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, who stated this during an interview yesterday monitored from our studios, also revealed that Nigeria would join BRICS+, a nine member economic and political force, at the right time.  Nigeria has been making proposals for debt forgiveness at the United Nations General Assembly for some years now but this hasn’t been achieved.  According to the Debt Management Office (DMO), Nigeria’s external debt stock as of March 2024 was N56trn ($42bn) while domestic debt stood at N65trn ($46.29)

NCoS Board suspends officers of correctional service after Bobrisky revelation.

The Board, Nigerian Correctional Service, the Nigerian Immigration Service, the Federal Fire Service, and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, has suspended senior officers of the service, to allow for further investigation on the various allegations against them.  The Board Secretary, Ja’afaru Ahmed, in a statement said the officers: Michael Anugwa and Sikiru Adekunle, both Deputy-Controller of corrections, in-charge of Medium and Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kiri-kiri, Lagos, were suspended following a viral video relating to Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky.  The board has also suspended ASC II Ogbule Obinna, serving at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Afikpo, Ebonyi State, for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate out of the custodial centre to a location outside the facility, while the board  equally suspended another senior officer of the service, Iloafonsi Ikechukwu, Deputy-Controller of Corrections (DCC), in-charge of Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kuje- Abuja, for allegedly receiving monies on behalf of an inmate.

Federal Government Begins New Minimum Wage Payment

Civil servants under the federal government payroll will start receiving the new N70,000 minimum wage payment from yesterday, September 26.  Spokesperson of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Bawa Mokwa, who stated this to journalists in an interview however did not state if the minimum wage would be paid alongside its arrears.  This comes days after the Chairman, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta, confirmed that the government has approved the upward review of consolidated public service salary structure.
