The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, and the President of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, have held a strategic meeting with the Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Mr. Martin Chungong, in Geneva. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments at the United Nations Headquarters. Mr. Chungong praised Nigeria’s commitment to parliamentary diplomacy, highlighting the country’s pivotal role in the “Not Too Young to Run” campaign.
The meeting focused on strengthening the partnership between the IPU and the Nigerian National Assembly in key areas such as climate change and gender equality. Speaker Abbas expressed gratitude for the IPU’s support, including a recent $25,000 donation towards the capacity-building program of the House Committee on Climate Change. He outlined Nigeria’s legislative strides on gender inclusion, including the Reserved Seats Bill, which proposes three reserved seats per state in the House of Representatives.
Speaker Abbas also highlighted Nigeria’s achievements in addressing climate change, including the 2021 Climate Change Act, West Africa’s first, and the country’s $400 million budgetary allocation to climate-related initiatives in 2025. He announced the establishment of a Standing Committee on Youths in Parliament to foster intergenerational dialogue and expressed concern over the withdrawal of USAID funding for HIV treatment, assuring that the 2025 budget makes provisions to mitigate this impact.
