The House of Representatives has called for a thorough investigation into alleged unethical practices in the disbursement of student loans under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND.
Raising a motion of urgent public importance, Hon. Aliyu Mustapha revealed that over 500,000 students have applied, with more than N54 billion disbursed so far. However, the National Orientation Agency has raised concerns over possible collusion between some tertiary institutions and banks to delay or divert funds.
Our correspondent Nathan Williams reports that in its resolve, the house urged NELFUND to implement advanced IT solutions to enhance verification and streamline processes within the system.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives hon, Abbas Tajudeen who presided over plenary referred the motion to the committees on student loans scholarship and higher education financing, before announcing the adjournment of the house from May 28th 2025 for the Salah break, to resume on June 17th 2025.
