President Bola Tinubu has called for urgent reforms in global governance, financial structures, and healthcare systems to promote fairness and inclusion for developing nations, particularly across Africa.
Speaking at the 17th BRICS Summit of the Global South and Emerging Economies during the weekend in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, President Tinubu highlighted Africa’s disproportionate burden in the global climate crisis despite its minimal contribution to emissions, stressed that low-income and emerging economies must not be left behind in global decision-making processes.
President Tinubu who was invited to the summit by Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, stated that environmental degradation, the climate crisis, and healthcare disparities are critical issues that demand increased global attention due to their effects on growth and development.
Nigeria’s leader, who reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to South-South cooperation, insisted that countries like Nigeria must take an active role in shaping policies on debt relief, climate change, and healthcare.
Tinubu who highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change on Africa, further called for global justice in the form of fair technology transfer, accessible climate financing, and inclusive growth frameworks that would allow emerging economies to benefit from development initiatives.
