President Tinubu swears in Ibas as Rivers State Sole Administrator

President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Étè Ibas as the sole administrator of Rivers State.

Addressing State House Correspondents after his swearing in yesterday, Ibas promised to work with all stakeholders to maintain law and order in Rivers state.

This comes less than 24 hours after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

In the meantime, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, saying it was done to protect the political, security and economic lifeline of the nation.

Addressing State House Correspondents at the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday, Fagbemi said the President’s decision was timely as it was anchored on the Supreme Court’s Judgment handed down on the 28th of February 2025, which the Governor refused to implement.

Our Correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that the Attorney-General of the Federation advised anyone unhappy with the declaration of state of emergency in Rivers State and the President’s suspension of Governor Fubara, and others, to approach the National Assembly.

He assured Nigerians that the federal government is taking all necessary steps to restore peace and stability in Rivers State.

Meanwhile, the Senate yesterday differed a motion to approve the proclamation of a state of Emergency in Rivers State till today.

It had earlier stepped down the motion which was its first order of the day until 3pm, without providing much explanation for the delay.

Also at today’s plenary, the Red Chamber approved the nomination of Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Uba Ringim, and three others as members of the Police Service Commission.

The others are Retired Justice Paul Galumje, Abdulfatah Mohammed and Retired Justice Christine Dabup.
