President Bola Tinubu has renamed University of Maiduguri in Borno state, to Muhammadu Buhari University in honour of the late Nigerian leader who died on Sunday July 13th in London, United Kingdom.
President Tinubu who made the announcement on Thursday, during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, said the renaming of the university is expected to serve as a lasting memorial to Buhari’s contributions to education, governance, and national development.
The University of Maiduguri, now Muhammadu Buhari University, holds historical significance in Buhari’s career, as he served as the first military Governor of the former North-Eastern State, which had its administrative capital in Maiduguri. The region was also central to his administration’s efforts to combat insurgency and rebuild communities affected by Boko Haram.
President Tinubu earlier paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former President Buhari, describing him as a leader who embodied justice, integrity, and unwavering patriotism throughout his decades of public service.
The President lauded Buhari’s commitment to justice, noting that his leadership was marked by restraint, humility, dignity, and moral clarity.
Our correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio in his tribute, described the late Ex-President as a principled, patriotic leader who gave his all to Nigeria.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbass eulogised the late Buhari, saying he did not live for applause or influence but for principle and a better Nigeria.
