President Bola Tinubu met on Thursday with key political figures from Rivers State, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, Speaker Martins Amaewhule, and members of the State House of Assembly.
The primary goal of the meeting was to reconcile the warring parties, whose disagreement had earlier triggered the declaration of a state of emergency in the state on March 18.
This marked the first public interaction between the President and Governor Fubara since the suspension of the governor, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the entire state legislature during the emergency declaration.
President Tinubu attributed the drastic action to the breakdown in cooperation between the governor and the Assembly, as well as escalating security concerns within the state.
While neither the presidency nor any of the participants released an official statement following the meeting, images from the event suggested a thaw in relations, with the President, Governor, and Minister all seen smiling. These visuals have fueled speculation that the state of emergency in Rivers may soon be lifted as the parties appear to be moving toward peaceful resolution.
