President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emphasized that the fight against illicit drugs and substance abuse in Nigeria must be a collective effort, involving all stakeholders, including families, faith leaders, civil society organizations, and community leaders.
Speaking at the commemoration of the 2025 World Drug Day, President Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator George Akume, stressed that the fight against drug abuse requires a comprehensive approach that addresses poverty, inequality, and violence.
The President commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and its Chairman, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), for their globally acclaimed successes in reducing drug supply and demand, while assuring that Nigeria stands firmly with the global community in the effort to curb drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
According to Marwa, the agency has achieved significant milestones, including the arrest of 66,085 offenders, seizure of 11.1 million kg of illicit drugs, conviction of 12,201 offenders, and rehabilitation of 26,393 individuals in 53 months.

He noted that the agency has strengthened prevention strategies, ramped up treatment and rehabilitation efforts, and collaborated with stakeholders to broaden the reach of its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaign.
Other dignitaries, including the Attorney General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, and the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, also emphasized the need for collective action to tackle the drug scourge, citing its threat to national security, social stability, and economic development.
