The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the extension of service for clinically skilled health professionals, raising the retirement age from 60 to 65.
Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with leaders of health sector unions, Pate said the President’s decision aligns with efforts to enhance benefits and support for healthcare professionals, especially as the government plans to retrain 60,000 health workers in 2025, following the retraining of over 53,000 in 2024.
The minister commended the dedication of health workers nationwide and highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering a constructive relationship with unions.
He also informed the gathering that President Tinubu has approved the disbursement of seven months of outstanding COVID-19 hazard allowances.
The meeting, attended by key unions such as the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), and the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), focused on sustaining improvements in the welfare of healthcare workers.
