President Tinubu Announces The Death of Former President Buhari

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially announced the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency, Buhari passed away in London at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, following a prolonged illness.

Vice President Kashim Shettima is expected to accompany the late President’s remains from the UK, back to Nigeria today in time for his burial, according to Islamic tradition.

Buhari, who led Nigeria as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, also served as military Head of State between 1984 and 1985.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu has summoned an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Tinubu in a tribute he personally signed, also confirmed that Buhari would be accorded full state honours, as he ordered flags to fly at half-staff for 7 days.

The President said the late Buhari’s passing filled him with “profound sorrow and a heavy heart,” adding that Nigeria has lost “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman.”

Similarly, world leaders, countries and other statesmen have been paying tribute to the man who led Africa’s most populous nation both as a military ruler and a civilian president.

Former head of state Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) and Ex‑President Olusegun Obasanjo in separate statements remembered Buhari as a “quiet yet resolute, patriot who will be surely missed.

Governors across the country, including Lagos State’s Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Katsina’s Dikko Radda, among others called Buhari’s death “a monumental loss, while highlighting his “honest and transparent” service across military and civilian roles.

The US Mission in Nigeria praised his “discipline” and efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, while the Chinese Embassy said his contributions to bilateral relations will be long remembered.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, conveyed heartfelt sympathy to Buhari’s family and the Nigerian people.
