Ahead of the Edo State governorship election slated for September 21, 2024, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to political actors, supporters, and voters, to play by the rules or face the full wrath of the law.
Speaking at the Election Stakeholders’ Meeting in Benin City, Edo on Wednesday, Egbetokun revealed that in order to ensure smooth electoral process, 35,000 police officers would be deployed across the state, with an additional 8,000 personnel from the armed forces and other security agencies.
The IGP who noted that comprehensive threat analysis of vulnerable points have been conducted, reassured the public that entry and exit points to the state would be secured, and movement restrictions would be imposed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Election Day.
Our correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that the IGP also announced that the activities of the Edo State Security Corps, which has been banned, remain suspended till further notice.
Furthermore, the IGP stated that all orderlies and escorts of VIPs will also be withdrawn on the eve of the election, with alternative security arrangements provided across the state.
