Opposition Political stakeholders across Nigeria, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as unconstitutional and a threat to democracy.
Speaking on behalf of the leaders under the aegis of Concerned Leaders and Political Stakeholders at a joint press conference today in Abuja, Atiku described the president’s decision as a “dangerous and illegal action” aimed at imposing federal control over a duly elected state government. The Opposition leaders issued a series of demands, including an immediate reversal of the emergency declaration and the reinstatement of the governor and state assembly.
Atiku also confirmed the formation of a Coalition of Opposition Political Parties to challenge President Tinubu in the 2027 elections while responding to a question on behalf of opposition leaders.
Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, warned against allowing political interests to undermine Nigeria’s democratic foundations, stating that the country’s constitution be respected.
Other opposition leaders at the press conference include Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, represented by Yunusa Tanko; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal; National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties, Peter Ahmeh; and Convenor of The Alternative, Segun Showunmi, amongst others.
