The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, on Tuesday presented 128 persons rescued from bandits’ captivity in Zamfara State, describing the operation as a demonstration of government’s determination to protect Nigerians.
Speaking at the handover of the rescued victims to their families, Ribadu said the rescue was the result of the “tireless efforts of our security forces and the unwavering support of our communities,” adding that beyond securing their release, attention would be given to the victims’ recovery.
Ribadu, who praised the armed forces, police, and intelligence services for their “courage, sacrifice and professionalism,” noted that the government’s security strategy continues to yield results. He also urged Nigerians to avoid politicizing victims’ suffering, stressing that the pain of victims should never be turned into a tool for partisan gain.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, gave details of the rescue. He explained that the victims were freed in two operations. He, however, disclosed that one child died from illness and exhaustion while in captivity, while another woman gave birth prematurely after her rescue. The newborn is currently receiving treatment in an incubator.
