At the 14th National Security Seminar held in Abuja, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, warned that poverty and hunger have become primary drivers of insecurity, violence, and societal instability across Nigeria.
They expressed concern over how these socioeconomic issues have escalated into serious national security threats.
Taking place simultaneously with President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration of 2,000 tractors under the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanisation Programme to boost food production, both officials underscored the urgency of addressing hunger and poverty.
Ribadu, represented by Major General PP Mala, emphasized that the federal government is actively working to resolve these problems by investing in agriculture, expanding social welfare programs, and strengthening security sector reforms.
General Musa, represented by Rear Admiral Ibrahim Shetimma, echoed this sentiment, insisting that these challenges now transcend social concerns and require a coordinated, nationwide effort. He stressed the importance of unity among stakeholders to confront the deepening internal security risks linked to widespread deprivation and food scarcity.
