The Chairman National Population Commission (NPC), , has reiterated the Commission’s commitment to achieving 100% birth registration in Nigeria on or before 2030.
Kwara who made this known at an event commemorating the 2024 Africa Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Day organized by UNICEF in Abuja, noted that the commission has made significant progress in birth registration, increasing coverage from 47% in 2022 to 67% currently.
While acknowledging that death registration remains a challenge, Kwara informed that the commission is expanding its scope to include marriages certification and divorces, to maintain a comprehensive national register of civil registration.
He announced plans to digitize the civil registration process, creating a robust and interoperable system that links civil registration with legal identity and vital statistics.
Earlier in her remarks, UNICEF Country Representative, Cristian Munduate, noted that accurate and reliable population data ensures completeness and timeliness of vital events records, supporting governance, policy-making, planning, and budgeting.
Also the Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC),Bisayo Coker Odusote, represented by the Director of IT, Lanre Yusuf noted that over 109 million Nigerians have been registered, with a focus on enrolling children below the age of 16.
He added that NIMC is on the verge of launching an improved national identity card as part of its digital inclusivity plan.
