Niger’s ruling junta says there would be a five-year transition to constitutional rule with immediate effect.
The time frame announced during a signing ceremony for a new transition charter yesterday, is in line with recommendations made in February by a commission following national discussions.
Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of Niger’s junta, was also sworn in as the country’s president for the five-year transitional period, following a new charter that supersedes the existing constitution.
This decision effectively dismissed efforts by ECOWAS to expedite a return to democratic governance after the coup in 2023, which ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
