Nigerian-American Commander Matuwo Olufokunbi has made history as the first Nigerian-American to qualify as a nuclear engineer under the U.S. Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program. He also becomes the third Nigerian-born officer to command a U.S. Navy warship.
Fellow Nigerian-born Navy officer Victor Agunbiade celebrated the achievement, sharing the milestone on social media and commending Olufokunbi’s leadership as he assumes command of USS Oak Hill (LSD 51).
Olufokunbi began his Navy career in 2001 as an Electronic Technician. He later earned an Electrical Engineering degree and completed the prestigious Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. His exceptional career includes serving as a Nuclear Programs Officer and holding key leadership roles.
His accolades include multiple Navy Commendation and Achievement Medals, reflecting his remarkable contributions to the U.S. Navy.
