Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to upholding a comprehensive nuclear test ban through its partnership with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO).
During a meeting with CTBTO Executive Secretary Dr. Robert Floyd at the Presidential Villa on Monday in Abuja, Shettima emphasized that Africa’s current priorities lie in addressing pressing issues such as poverty and climate change, rather than pursuing nuclear weapons capabilities.
Shettima praised the CTBTO for its multifaceted role, highlighting how its monitoring systems not only support nuclear non-proliferation but also contribute to civilian purposes, including detecting tsunamis and volcanic seismic activities. He noted that these efforts enhance global ecological stability.
Dr. Floyd commended Nigeria’s leadership under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for contributing to the global reduction of nuclear testing and for upholding strong norms against it. He described the relationship between the CTBTO and Nigeria as a natural partnership, underscoring the mutual benefits and shared goals in promoting peace and security.
