The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed deep concern over the growing wave of human rights abuses across Nigeria, revealing that it received a staggering 275,256 complaints in May 2025 alone.
The Commission made this disclosure on Tuesday during the official presentation of its May 2025 Human Rights Situation Dashboard in Abuja, where it also launched a new Quarterly Dashboard on Internal Displacement and Human Rights.
Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN), said the sheer volume of complaints is a reflection of a troubling reality in the country, describing the growing public indifference to violations as a worrying trend, noting that many citizens no longer expect redress or accountability.
The NHRC also spotlighted the devastating Mokwa floods in Niger State, which reportedly claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands. The Commission said the situation has further worsened conditions for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), who continue to suffer infringements on their rights to healthcare, dignity, and livelihood.
According to the data, over 40,000 displacements were recorded within the quarter, alongside 1,460 human rights complaints from displaced persons across 34 Local Government Areas in 11 states.
