Following the alleged torture, inhuman and degrading treatment of Ms. Comfort Emmanson during a recent incident aboard an Ibom Air flight, alongside other similar incidents recorded lately, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for a comprehensive review of aviation protocols to ensure full compliance with human rights standards.
Briefing newsmen today in Abuja, the NHRC Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, said the review should cover procedures for managing unruly passengers and safeguard the rights to life, safety, dignity, fair hearing, freedom of movement, and freedom from torture, inhuman or degrading treatment.
The commission noted that corporate bodies, including Ibom Air and ValueJet Airline, have a duty to uphold human rights in their operations. It urged airline managements to adopt effective protocols for resolving conflicts without resorting to degrading treatment, adding that proper de-escalation techniques could have prevented the incidents.
In addition, the NHRC called on prosecutorial and investigative bodies to ensure swift prosecution of those found culpable under the Anti-Torture Act, 2017, and pledged to support victims in line with its mandate.
