The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced a 93% increase in capitation fees and a 378% rise in fee-for-service payments, marking the first major adjustment in over a decade.
The new rates, approved by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, will take effect from April 2025.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Monday, NHIA Director General, Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, said the adjustments were based on a completed actuarial review and aimed at aligning provider compensation with rising medical costs.
Dr. Ohiri noted that the revised rates support the Federal Government’s goal of strengthening the healthcare system and improving national health outcomes.
The NHIA had previously made an interim adjustment six months ago, increasing capitation fees by 60% and fee-for-service payments by 40% to stabilize the sector while awaiting a full actuarial review.
The new tariffs are expected to provide fair compensation for healthcare providers, encourage high service standards, and improve patient care across the country.
