Muslim pilgrims prayed atop Mount Arafat on Thursday during the high point of the annual hajj pilgrimage, as Saudi officials called on participants to refrain from being outside during the hottest hours of the day.
Thousands arrived before dawn at the hill and its surrounding plain, believed to be the site of the Prophet Mohammed’s final sermon. Some early risers, carrying colorful umbrellas, made use of the cooler morning, while many others stayed for long hours of prayer and Quran recitations until evening, enduring one of the most challenging phases of the hajj.
After sunset, the pilgrims will travel to Muzdalifah, a location between Arafat and the vast tent city of Mina, where they will collect pebbles to carry out the symbolic act of “stoning the devil.”
