The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has condemned the recent shooting of a Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) officer allegedly on the orders of a Chinese company operating in Nigeria, describing the incident as an attack on the sovereignty of our Nation.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ sensitization workshop on the implementation of the Nigeria Visa Policy 2025 today in Abuja, the minister expressed outrage over the shooting, vowing that the government would take firm action against the perpetrators.
The minister who announced a new expatriate administration system set to begin on May 1st 2025, also disclosed that the government will introduce penalties for visa overstays, categorizing individuals into a three-tier system: a white list for compliant visitors, a grey list for minor infractions, and a blacklist for severe violations affecting national security.
With the digitalization of visa applications, landing cards, and immigration enforcement, the minister assured stakeholders of a seamless and efficient system, as he set a target of 48 hours for e-visa approvals and 10 working days for long-stay visa applications.
In her remarks, Controller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nana Nandap described the policy as “a transformative milestone in the nation’s journey towards digital governance and global integration, eliminating the need for in-person visits to embassies or consulates.
