INEC Says Petition For Senator Natasha’s Recall Does Not Meet Requirement

Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has withdrawn from a case involving suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, saying he could no longer handle the matter after Senate President Godswill Akpabio wrote a petition questioning his impartiality.

When the court clerk called the case up yesterday, Justice Egwuatu ruled that he was stepping aside, saying he would return the case file to the Chief Judge, who would reassign it to another judge.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission, has faulted the petition submitted for the recall of the Senator Natasha, by some members of her constituency, saying it did not comply with the process of recall as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.

A statement by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, explained that the commission observed that the representatives of the petitioners did not provide their contact address, telephone number(s) and e-mail address(es) in the covering letter forwarding the petition through which they can be contacted as provided in Clause 1(f) of INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines.

He however added that if the petitioners fully comply with the requirements of Clause 1(f) of the Regulations and Guidelines regarding the submission of their petition, the commission will announce the next steps in line with the extant laws, regulations and guidelines.
