The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has received applications from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties, assuring Nigerians that the process will be handled with transparency and in strict accordance with the law.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who made this known today during a consultative meeting with media executives at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, explained that the full list of the associations, including their proposed names, acronyms, addresses, and details of interim leadership, will be made public for scrutiny.
Prof. Yakubu dismissed insinuations suggesting that the Commission is reluctant to register new political parties, describing such claims as false. He recalled similar accusations made in 2013 when some groups alleged INEC was obstructing proposed political mergers.
According to him, the Commission has so far acknowledged 104 of the 110 applications received, with the remaining six to be processed by the end of the week.
The INEC Chairman also announced that preparations are underway for outstanding bye-elections and the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) nationwide.
Speaking at the meeting, President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhassan Yahaya, expressed appreciation for the Commission’s efforts in ensuring journalists’ safety during elections and called for the same level of commitment ahead of upcoming polls, including those in Anambra State.
Prof. Yakubu further briefed the media on ongoing preparations for the Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), noting that political parties have until Monday, June 30, 2025, to conclude their primaries.
He urged media organisations to promptly apply for accreditation to cover the forthcoming Anambra State Governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025, to enable timely processing of their tags.
