The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has charged the newly sworn-in Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to uphold the electoral laws and operate strictly within the Commission’s established guidelines, warning that any act of defiance or indiscretion will attract serious consequences.
Speaking in Abuja today during the swearing-in ceremony of six newly appointed RECs, Prof. Yakubu reminded them that their postings are full-time responsibilities. He cautioned against unilateral decisions, insisting they must not act independently or violate the Commission’s regulations without facing appropriate sanctions.
He also announced the deployment of the new RECs to various states, reiterating that no one would serve in their state of origin, in line with existing policy. He added that some current RECs would be redeployed, with the full list of postings to be published online.
Meanwhile, the Commission has released the official timetable for the forthcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States. The Ekiti election is scheduled for Saturday, July 20, 2026, while voters in Osun will head to the polls on Saturday, August 8, 2026.
The INEC Chairman also acknowledged growing public concern over the delay in conducting pending by-elections and the resumption of continuous voter registration. He disclosed that the number of pending by-elections has risen to 17, adding that preparations are ongoing and details will be made public in due course.
Speaking on behalf of the newly sworn-in RECs, Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris pledged that they would discharge their duties with utmost integrity, impartiality, and professionalism.
