The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has clarified that the Commission does not receive direct funding from the European Union (EU), while reaffirming INEC’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process.
Speaking during a meeting with the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, at INEC headquarters today in Abuja, Prof. Yakubu acknowledged EU’s contributions to enhancing Nigeria’s electoral system, particularly through the Recommendations of its Election Observation Missions.
Earlier, EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democracy, as he called for a more credible electoral system that earns the trust of citizens and stakeholders.
The ambassador disclosed that the EU’s ongoing Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) project includes a €19 million funding envelope. However, he Clarified that the partnership is not solely about financial support but also About providing technical expertise and fostering collaboration.
Prof. Yakubu who outlined INEC’s progress in implementing reforms, including enhanced Training for electoral staff, improved functionality of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), emphasized the Commission’s ongoing engagement with various stakeholders, including political parties, civil society Organizations, the media, and security agencies.
