The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has concluded its internal review of the 13 recommendations directed at it by the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission following Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, but is now awaiting legislative intervention on proposals requiring legal amendments.
Chairman of the Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the disclosure on Monday while hosting a delegation from the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) in Abuja. The team is in Nigeria for a post-election follow-up needs assessment mission to track progress on the implementation of recommendations issued after the last general elections.
“We have prepared a detailed response to each of the 13 observations addressed to INEC. Most of these have been incorporated into our 142 recommendations for electoral reform, which we published on our website following extensive stakeholder consultations,” Yakubu stated.
He noted that while INEC has taken all necessary administrative steps on the aspects within its jurisdiction, the Commission awaits action from the National Assembly and other relevant institutions on reforms that require amendments to existing electoral laws.
The INEC Chairman also commended ECOWAS for its commitment to democratic development in the region through its structured election observation and follow-up missions, adding that Nigeria has participated in similar engagements in other West African countries.
In her remarks, Chairperson of Liberia’s National Elections Commission and leader of the ECONEC delegation, Mrs. Davidetta Browne Lansanah, said the visit was part of a peer-to-peer engagement aimed at evaluating how INEC responded to the ECOWAS report on the 2023 elections.
She praised INEC’s transparency and the availability of key documents on its website, noting that lessons from Nigeria’s post-election process could benefit electoral commissions across the region.
“This mission allows us to learn from each other and strengthen electoral management systems across West Africa,” she said.
The ECONEC delegation comprises electoral officials and experts from Ghana, the ECOWAS Commission, and regional support bodies. Their visit marks a continued effort to promote accountability, transparency, and collaboration among election management bodies across the ECOWAS sub-region.
