Gabon To Hold First Presidential Election Since 2023 Coup

Gabon will this Saturday hold a presidential election, the first since a 2023 coup ended the Bongo family’s 56-year dynasty.

The country’s new military rulers, led by Brice Oligui Nguema, hope the poll will legitimise and cement their hold on power.

Nguema, who took power in August 2023, had initially promised to hand back power to civilians, but declared himself head of the transitional government, and only last month, announced his candidacy for Saturday’s vote.
