The Federal Government has issued a strong warning against overloading and violation of safety standards on Nigeria’s bridges and flyovers, following a series of incidents threatening the structural integrity of key infrastructure across the country.
Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, who made this known, citing the recent damage to the Keffi Flyover caused by a container-laden trailer that exceeded the permissible clearance height. He noted that such incidents highlight widespread disregard for load and height restrictions.
He explained that the minimum standard headroom for flyovers and interchanges ranges between 5.5 and 6.5 metres, and any breach of this requirement not only violates federal law but also reduces the lifespan of vital transport links.
The Minister disclosed that at least seven bridges along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway have suffered structural damage due to similar violations. He also gave an update on the Eko Bridge, which was damaged by fire in the previous administration and is now 80% rehabilitated, thanks to swift funding approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking on the ongoing works on the 3rd Mainland and Carter Bridges, Umahi appealed to commuters to remain patient, noting that the discomfort is temporary but necessary for long-term safety.
To address persistent abuse of infrastructure, the Minister revealed that the government will collaborate with enforcement agencies to launch a nationwide clampdown on non-compliant vehicles. This will include monitoring weight limits, clearance heights, and load configurations.
