The Federal Government has received 231 Nigerian youths, comprising boys and girls, who were victims of human trafficking and recently rescued from Ghana.
According to the Head of Human Trafficking at Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Staff Officer Dominic Mensah, the victims were found during a raid on an estate where they were lodged after being lured under false pretenses.
Speaking during the reception ceremony, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NIDCOM, urged the victims to remain hopeful and proud despite their ordeal.
Upon their arrival in Lagos, the returnees, aged between 15 and 38 years, were handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for profiling and rehabilitation.
In her remarks, NAPTIP Zonal Commander, Comfort Agboka, said the victims would undergo thorough profiling while the suspects would be handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation.
Edo State accounted for the highest number of victims with 76 indigenes. Other states included Delta (17), Imo (19), Bayelsa (13), Enugu (12), Ebonyi (8), Cross River (7), Anambra (6), Kogi (6), Abia (9), Niger (4), Akwa Ibom (3), Ondo (1), and Osun (1).
