The Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and UNESCO, has flagged off a two-day capacity building workshop to mark the 2025 World Press Freedom Day, urging media professionals to approach the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with responsibility and caution.
Speaking at the opening ceremony today in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, represented by the Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Dr. Suleiman Haruna, described the workshop as timely, noting that the media sector is undergoing rapid shifts driven by emerging technologies.
He stated that the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, remains committed to advancing press freedom and upgrading government communication, including sustained training and support for media professionals.
In his welcome remarks, Mr. Albert Mendy, Head of Office and Representative of UNESCO Abuja, restated the organisation’s commitment to supporting journalists and defending independent media, as He noted that the growth of AI has brought new challenges to the integrity of information shared with the public.
The National President of the NUJ, Comrade Yahya Alhassan, alongside the Chairman of the Federal Information Chapel, Comrade Raphael Towoju, described the workshop as a vital step toward equipping public communicators for the changing realities of digital-era journalism, and a call for a media bail out bill.
